80's Fashion

Article by Lethabo | Editor Jayla McGowan | Editor Deandre Hill

Milan is and has been one of the centerpieces of European fashion. Milan fashion has long been an indicator of creativity and status among the people. This creates a clothing style that is overall dressier, thus looked at as a fashion capital within Europe. To further maintain its reputation, Milan holds a semi-annual fashion week for both men and women’s fashion. Some of the biggest names in fashion show up for their chance to display their latest styles and designs to not just Milan or Europe, but the world.

The latest Women’s Fashion week in February displayed styles from big name brands such as Prada, Fendi, Giorgio Armani, Dolce & Gabbana and Bottega Veneta. Not only did the clothes take the spotlight, but the makeup provided an elegant touch to eac outfit. A common display of expansiveness and movement was a common appearance within the 50 shows.

The 80s fashion may have faced criticism over time, but its true impact on present-day fashion often goes unrecognized. The era's trends have significantly shaped and influenced the current fashion landscape, showcasing a lasting legacy that continues to inspire modern style

Saudi designers returning to Milan Fashion Week

As a move to increase their influence on the fashion world, Saudi Arabia will be sending designers from the 100 brand program to WHITE Milano. White Milano is an anticipated event of Milan Fashion Week and it is an opportunity for local and emerging fashion brands to connect to top buyers and journalists.  Focusing on women’s wear, this event is to run from the 22nd of September to the 25th of  the same month.

Brenda Bellei, CEO of WHITE, expressed her excitement for the upcoming event, emphasizing the anticipation of welcoming talented Saudi designers to Milan Fashion Week for the second consecutive year. The fashion community has been captivated by the fusion of traditional elements and innovation showcased in their collections. WHITE feels honored to provide these designers with a platform to connect with influential press and buyers from prestigious boutique and department stores worldwide. With the support of the Saudi Ministry of Culture and Fashion Commission, designers participating in the 'Saudi 100 Brands' program are able to reach an international audience, making Milan the perfect stage to display their talent and creativity.

The Saudi 100 Brands program supports local Saudi Brands in the development of their brands. The program does this by providing designers with the tools needed for them to succeed in the industry. These includes: master classes, workshops, and mentorship by veterans in the industry. As shown by many fashion in events in New York and Paris for example, this project has been proven to be a very successful one.

Burak Cakmak, CEO of the Saudi Fashion Commission, further emphasized the significance of WHITE Milano in promoting the unique Saudi fashion scene. Celebrating Saudi Arabia's cultural legacy, rich history of skilled artisans, and exquisite craftsmanship, the fashion industry in the country blends luxury, extravagant couture, and contemporary elements seamlessly. Supporting Saudi designers in expanding their presence in international markets and providing them with an opportunity to showcase their work in front of influential buyers and decision-makers is crucial for their global growth. Collaboration with new supporters from around the world at this year's show is eagerly anticipated, as WHITE Milano, held in the heart of Milan's fashion district in Tortona, attracts over 20,000 visitors annually, ensuring substantial exposure for the 1000-plus participating brands.

One of the notable events is the 9th edition of the Fashion Film Festival, established and directed by Constanza Etro, in collaboration with Cnmi and under the patronage of the City of Milan. With its diverse range of styles and a fervent audience that gathers annually, Milan undeniably holds the title of the fashion capital of the world.
