Unveiling Systemic Racism: The Black Lives in Music Survey Exposes Inequities in the UK Music Industry

07celeste2-mediumSquareAt3X.jpg

A groundbreaking survey, the Black Lives in Music Survey, has shed light on the deeply ingrained systemic racism within the UK music industry, with a particular focus on its adverse impact on Black female artists. Released on October 13, the survey stands as the most extensive examination of the experiences of Black musicians and industry professionals to date. Among the 1,718 performers, creatives, and industry staff surveyed, over half reported facing direct or indirect racism, challenging assumptions about the type of music they should create.

The statistics are stark, with 63% of Black music creators disclosing encounters with direct or indirect racism and a staggering 71% reporting experiencing microaggressions. The survey also revealed that 88% of all Black music professionals acknowledge the existence of barriers hindering their progression. For Black women in the industry, these challenges extend to issues like pressure to alter their appearance and concerns about earning disparities compared to their white counterparts. The survey exposes a pervasive problem that undermines the industry's commitment to diversity and inclusivity.

Black Lives in Music CEO Charisse Beaumont emphasizes the gravity of the findings, noting that the disparities faced by Black creators and industry professionals are deeply rooted in traditionalism and systemic racism. The report uncovers instances of racist culture and behaviors in the workplace, financial barriers, and insufficient investment in Black music creators. Beaumont stresses that these factors not only impede career growth but also significantly impact the mental health of Black professionals. This report serves as a call to action, challenging the industry to confront its biases and create an environment that truly embraces diversity and equality.

Luke Combs Apologizes and Offers Generous Gesture to Fan Facing Legal Woes Over Merchandise

Luke-Combs.webp

Country music sensation Luke Combs recently issued a heartfelt public apology to Nicol Harness, a Florida woman embroiled in a legal battle over the use of Combs' likeness on fan merchandise she sold online. Harness, who suffers from congestive heart failure, supports herself by selling tumblers and t-shirts on Amazon, including 18 tumblers featuring Combs' image. Unaware of the copyright infringement case filed against her and other online shops in October, Harness found herself ordered to pay $250,000 in damages. Combs, expressing shock and remorse after learning about Harness' situation, vowed to reimburse her double the amount frozen in the legal action.

In a video posted on Instagram, Combs explained that the lawsuit was meant for large corporations involved in counterfeiting, not individual fans like Harness. Moved by her plight, Combs pledged to send her $11,000, covering the funds locked in her Amazon account. Additionally, the country star promised to design a tumbler to be sold on his official merchandise website, with proceeds directed towards helping Harness and her family with medical bills. Combs extended an invitation for Harness and her family to attend one of his shows, emphasizing his commitment to ensuring that no fan should endure such legal challenges.

The incident sheds light on the unintended consequences of legal actions against copyright infringement and the importance of distinguishing between large-scale counterfeit operations and individual fans who may unknowingly infringe on trademarks. Combs' swift response demonstrates a commitment to his fan base and a willingness to rectify an unfortunate situation, showcasing the compassionate side of the country star amidst a challenging legal landscape.

Behind the Beats: Lizzo's Alleged Harmonies of
Hypocrisy

Article by Faycal Amrouche | Editor Philip King

Lizzo, the renowned singer celebrated for her uplifting melodies and empowering lyrics, now finds herself ensnared in the somber tones of controversy. Former dancers who once adorned her performances have brought forth a legal ordeal, alleging a discordant narrative. These dancers have accused Lizzo of creating a hostile and toxic work environment, a stark contrast to her previously celebrated message of self-love and positivity.

The lawsuit, unveiled in a Los Angeles courtroom, unveils unsettling claims. The ex-dancers assert that Lizzo engaged in sexual harassment and displayed weight-based discrimination. Allegations include instances of uncomfortable coercion during an Amsterdam club outing and the dancers being subjected to explicit activities. Amid these allegations, Lizzo's dance captain, Shirlene Quigley, is implicated in claims of religious and racial harassment, casting an even darker shadow over the unfolding situation.

Lizzo's response to these claims has been one of denial, vehemently labeling them as false, unbelievable, and outrageous. As the legal drama unfolds, Lizzo's image as a vibrant advocate for self-acceptance faces its own dissonance. Former dancers, now removed from the stage, seek answers and justice, prompting a broader reflection on the gap between an artist's public persona and private conduct.

This chapter serves as a poignant reminder that even the most harmonious melodies can sometimes be tainted by discordant notes. As the world of showbiz watches with bated breath, the unfolding narrative raises questions about the alignment of an artist's beliefs and actions. The hope lingers that justice and truth will ultimately compose a symphony of resolution and reconciliation, echoing throughout the ever-evolving world of music and entertainment.

Jason Aldean, “Don’t Mess With His Small Town”

Article by Andrea McCoy | Editor Chris Jarmon

maxresdefault.jpg

Country music singer Jason Aldean dropped his newest single, “Try that in a Small Town” which has created a mix of backlash and popularity among listeners and fans. Country Music Television (CMT) stated that they will no longer air the music video on their platform. This decision came after critics claimed that the song contained lyrics that glorified gun violence and conveyed traditionally racist ideas. Aldean released the song  in May, but it wasn't until the release of the video on July 14 — as promotion for his 11th upcoming album — that the discourse heated up. In a statement released alongside the video, Aldean said the song represents an "unspoken rule" for those raised in small towns: "We all have each other's backs and we look out for each other."

But other viewer’s perceived a different message. The song talks about the repercussions one will face if they committed crimes like disgracing the flag, looting, and violent protesting if committed in his small town. Along with a chorus that references gun rights, "I've got a gun that my granddad gave me / they say one day they're gonna round up. / Well that s*** might fly in the city / good luck / Try that in a small town". Now the video itself is the real problem for people and here are some of the reasons why. Interspersed between shots of Aldean singing are clips of vandalizing, riots and police encounters, much of which is evocative of racial injustice protests. Also the backdrop that is mainly used in Aldean’s music video is a shot of  The Maury County Courthouse building in Columbia, Tennessee.  Which serves as an American-flag-draped backdrop for Aldean and his band.

The landmark was the site of race riots in 1946 as well as a 1927 lynching in which a white mob pulled an 18-year-old black man, Henry Choate, from jail and dragged him through the city by car, according to several media reports, including one detailed account from The Washington Post. Choate had allegedly confessed to attacking a 16-year-old white girl "to protect his life," even though the girl "could not positively identify him as the assailant," the Post reported. On Tuesday, Aldean pushed back hard against accusations he was "pro-lynching," saying such an interpretation "goes too far" and is "dangerous." "There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it," he wrote on Twitter. "Try That In A Small Town, for me, refers to the feeling of a community that I had growing up, where we took care of our neighbors, regardless of differences of background or belief.""NO ONE, including me, wants to continue to see senseless headlines or families ripped apart," he wrote.

Lil Baby posted an updated tour schedule on Instagram last week, with the addition of two new dates in Philadelphia on Aug. 29 and New York City on Aug. 30. Lil Durk also had changed his plans for his upcoming tour dates. Lil Durk called off over 20 concerts,  including his set at Rolling Loud Miami this weekend, as he continues to recover following a reported hospitalization earlier this month.

Lil Durk was supposed to kick off his lengthy Sorry for the Drought tour at the end of this month, but pretty much every show on the itinerary is currently labeled “canceled” on Ticketmaster. The only two gigs still listed are hometown shows in Chicago: A Sorry for the Drought performance on Aug. 11, followed by an appearance at the WGCI Summer Jam on Aug. 12. In a statement shared with Rolling Stone, the rapper said: “Since I’m still awaiting to get full clearance from my doctors to travel and perform again, I have no other choice but to cancel my headlining Rolling Loud performance. While I’m resting, I am looking forward to my two homecoming shows on the 11th and 12th in Chicago. For the rest of the country, I’ll be announcing new dates soon.”
