Texas Law Temporarily Restricts Drag Performances in Texas
Drag queens have continued to cause ripples in U.S. politics, with varying judgments of whether these shows' are appropriate for children or not. As drag queens gain more attraction to the mainstream audience, with major companies like Netflix hosting drag queen focused shows, and popular drag show ‘Rupaul's Drag Race’ being brought to the forefront of pop culture, there has been an increased acceptance of drag queens. However, some politicians have taken it into their hands to attempt to decrease the visibility of drag queens. Most recently, the Texas Legislature has voted on a temporary bill that targets drag queen performances in the state of Texas.
The law, SB12, or Senate Bill 12, states that regulation and restriction of sexually orientated performances is required on commercial enterprise, public property, or in the presence of a minor. If an individual does not abide by this law, criminal offense measures will be taken. With 9 ayes and 4 nays, the law went into a temporal effect on Sept. 1. Although, the execution of the law did not prevent a push back from Texans.
Sen. Bryan Huges, the senator who authored the bill, believes that any and all drag queen performances should not be shown to minors. However, both Texan drag queens and venues that hold drag queen events held for adults and children, felt that the law unfairly attacked and targeted drag queen performances. Bridgette Bandit, a popular drag queen in Austin, TX, has spoken out against this bill and has taken her stance to court. In bright pink drag, Bandit spoke strongly against the bills in court saying, “None of us want to have children at our drag shows at the gay bar at 11 p.m. on a Friday night ...but we do want to continue our events like drag story times that are intentionally modified to be appropriate for children.” Bandit, along with other drag queens, and allies hope that their protest against the bill will make a change for protection of drag queens in the state of Texas.

As hurricane season slowly comes to an end, another hurricane wipes through the U.S., hitting Florida causing devastation. However, with aid from Pres. Joe Biden, Floridians are slowly regaining their livelihoods from the effects of Hurricane Idalia.
The hurricane left unruly hits on Floridians, with egregious amounts of flooding and wind damage. First coming in at a Category 4 on Florida's Gulf, Hurricane Idalia slowed down to a Category 3 once hitting The Big Bend of Florida, an area near Tallahassee, the capital, and Tampa. The Big Bend ended up being one of the most affected places in Florida, having hundreds of neighborhoods in the area flooded and over swamped with water.
In total, the storm caused up to $20 billion in damage, including the damage done in Georgia, which Hurricane Idalia hit after Florida. The hurricane left thousands homeless and jobless, leaving them looking to others for help. Fortunately, many are receiving aid from both federal and state efforts. This past week, Pres. Biden visited Florida to discuss clean up and repairing of the devastation from the hurricane with FEMA, in which both financial and medical aid will be provided.

Tensions are high as the 2024 primary race continues, with Republican candidates fighting it out on pressing issues in their first presidential debate.
Hosted on Fox News, eight candidates were on stage, with former Pres. Donald Trump opting out for a pre-recorded interview with Tucker Carlson on X, previously Twitter. FL Gov. Ron Desantis, Vivek Ramaswamy, former Vice Pres. Mike Pence, former NJ Gov. Chris Christie, former SC Gov. Nikki Haley, SC Sen. Tim Scott, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, and former AR Gov. Asa Hutchinson were all present for the debate,
Ramaswamy, a businessman and founder of Roivant Sciences, was one of the most targeted candidates of the night. Pence went straight for Ramaswamy, calling him a “rookie”, continuing to say that it would be irresponsible for Americans to choose an inexperienced man to lead the White House. Haley also took a few hits at him as well. Continuing Pence’s sentiment of Ramaswamy’s lack of political experience, Haley, a candidate in support of US aid to Ukraine, called him “inexperienced” in foreign policies, after he expressed aversion for US support of Ukraine.
Desantis seemed unusually uncomfortable during the debate, shifting on his feet and fidgeting throughout. Placed right in the center, due to his high ranking in the polls, he barely spoke, and when he did it was only pre-prepared answers that had been repeated throughout his campaign.
Post-debate, with Donald Trump in the lead, Ron Desantis remains close behind, being the second most popular candidate, and Ramaswamy in third.

Since his departure from office, former Pres. Donald Trump has continued to face charges from various prosecutors across the country, most recently in Georgia for his attempted interference with the 2020 Presidential election. He and 18 other people have been charged for their involvement.
Despite his loss, former Pres. Trump persisted that he was the winner of the 2020 election throughout the months following it, going so far as to do numerous recounts in multiple states, including Georgia. Although the recounts continued to show that Pres. Joe Biden still won, Trump and associates continued to fight it, illegally skewing election votes in his favor.
High profile lawyers like Rudy Guliani and John Eastman attempted to work with Georgia state lawmakers to appoint fake, pro-Trump electors. While Republican politicians and allies, like Jenna Ellis and Scott Graham Hall, promoted voter fraud, spread misinformation, and stole voting information. Former President Trump has made a significant shift in his legal representation amidst ongoing litigation in Fulton County, Georgia. Replacing Drew Findling with Steven Sadow, an esteemed attorney based in Atlanta, Trump's choice suggests a strategic move. Sadow is known as a “special counsel for white collar and high-profile defense,” according to his online profile. Notably, he has previously challenged Georgia's expansive RICO law, the very legislation under which Trump and his 18 co-defendants stand accused. In a recent development, Sadow filed official paperwork on Thursday to formally represent the ex-president in this controversial case.

This change in defense isn't indicative of any shortcomings on Findling’s part, according to sources close to Trump. In fact, another insider acquainted with Sadow lauded him as the “best criminal defense attorney in Georgia.” As the legal proceedings continue, Trump's other Georgia-based lawyer, Jennifer Little, is slated to remain on board, collaborating closely with Sadow. Addressing his new role, Sadow commented, “I have been retained to represent President Trump in the Fulton County, Georgia case. He is innocent of all charges against him and should never have been indicted.” Sadow's history of skepticism towards RICO charges, evident from his 2021 critique of them as a tool for prosecutors, further underscores his position. Ohio Gains Win for State Abortion Rights

Since the controversial abolishment of Roe v. Wade, a Supreme Court decision that discussed the federal right to abortion for women, protests to regain the fundamental right have sprung up across the country, each state taking their own measures to the ruling, including Ohio. Recently, a statewide decision was made in favor of abortion rights in Ohio.
In an effort to lower the amount of abortion rights, due to an upcoming abortion right amendment proposal in Nov., conservative Ohioians created a ballot, named “Issue 1”, that would change the needed amount of voter support for future state constitutional amendments. Going from 50 percent to 60 percent of needed support, making it more difficult for non-conservative Ohioan voices to be heard, who are overwhelmingly women, making up almost 60 percent of the state's progressives.
The passing of ‘Issue 1’ would have lowered the chance of the abortion right amendment proposal to pass, thus lessening the amount of rights for women in Ohio. However, Ohio voters pulled through with over 50 percent of voters voting against the new ballot. The rejection of ‘Issue 1’ helped to make an indirect win for abortion rights in Ohio.
Maui’s Wildfires Leaves Families Devastated

An intense wildfire blazed the Hawaiian island of Maui, leaving families stranded and homeless. As the fire spreads throughout the island, burning buildings to a crisp, efforts are being made to investigate the cause of the wildfire and to help the Maui residents.
Hawaiian officials are currently investigating the cause of the fires on the island of the beachy state. One of the major hypotheses by officials in the case is Hawaiian Electric’s, the primary power company in the state, playing in the spreading of the fire. High winds that spread the fire along with it were able to pass through their power lines that had not been shut off, furthering the wildfire. This is despite their sensors detecting utility failures hours before the fires started.
Many are trying to rebuild their life back together, picking it up piece by piece. The fire has been the deadliest in US history in over 100 years, with, at the moment, over 100 people having passed away, and over 1,000 still missing. Search teams have continued to work on finding these missing people, as well, Maui residents are thankfully receiving emergency aid from the state’s attorney general, Anne Lopez.

Texas has been intensifying its border control measures in recent years, and one notable development took place this July when buoys were installed in the Rio Grande, which separates the Texas U.S./Mexico border. Despite these efforts to curb and reduce migration into the state, the desired effects have not been achieved, and a tragic incident last week further highlights the challenges. Two bodies were discovered in the area between the newly installed buoys in the Rio Grande.

The authorities found the first body between the buoys, while the second body was located separately near the buoys in the border river. At present, the cause of death for these individuals remains unknown, and their identities as migrants or locals are yet to be determined.

Both the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs have expressed concern and are actively investigating the case. The topic of LGBTQ+ rights and the understatement of the LGBTQ+ community has been a divider in American social politics for decades. But as more states add on LGBTQ+ rights and remove prejudice and discriminatory laws, progression ensues. Since the 2012 California conversion therapy ban, efforts to ban this infringement on LGBTQ+ youths rights have spread across multiple states. Now as the 22nd state to do so, Michigan bans LGBTQ+ conversion therapy.
Michigan Governor, and mother of an LGBTQ+ child, Gretchen Whitmer, bans the practice in action to not only prevent it from happening again in the state, but to also encourage a more inclusive and safe environment for LGBTQ+ youth in the Great Lakes state, where only 40 percent of LGBTQ+ youths receive proper mental health treatment. Gov. Whitmer's decision to ban this law presents a strong leap forward to decrease the amount of LGBTQ+ youth that struggle with mental health.
This comes after efforts from Gov. Whitmer to establish more rights for LGBTQ+ youth. Earlier this year in June, she established the state's first statewide LGBTQ+ commission, in an effort to work on the rights of them. The commission is serving as an advisor for Gov.
