Street art is different from traditional art forms because it is usually done on public surfaces such as walls, buildings, sidewalks, and streets. It is often created with spray paint, stencils, stickers, and other forms of visual media. Street artists often use their art to convey social, political, or cultural messages, making it a powerful form of visual communication.

One of the most famous street artists in the world is Banksy, a British artist known for his political and social commentary through graffiti art. Banksy’s work can be found on walls, bridges, and buildings in cities around the world. His art often features provocative images and messages that challenge the status quo and make people think about the world around them.

Another notable street artist is Shepard Fairey, who rose to fame with his “Hope” poster during Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. Fairey’s work can be seen in public spaces all over the world, and often features bold graphics and political messages.

Train graffiti first appeared on the metro system in New York City.
Graffiti artists first realized in the 1970s that the subway system could be used as a moving canvas for their art as the early 1960s saw the emergence of graffiti tagging on NYC's buildings. This allowed graffiti artists in nearby municipalities to view the work of artists from other parts of the city. The subway system in New York City proved to be the ideal means because the goal of the game is to have as many people see your tag as you can.

One of the unique aspects of street art is that it is often temporary. The art can be painted over or removed by the authorities, and sometimes even by other street artists. This ephemeral quality adds to the excitement and energy of street art, as people rush to see it before it disappears.

Berlin's Friedrichshain has a public art-covered block.

Street art has a long history that dates back to the 1960s and 70s when it was associated with the hip-hop and punk rock movements. Graffiti art was a way for young people to express themselves and rebel against the mainstream culture. Over time, street art has evolved into a more respected and recognized form of art, with many cities now hosting street art festivals and exhibitions.

In conclusion, street art is a unique and dynamic form of artistic expression that has captured the imagination of people around the world. It is often associated with social and political commentary, and has the power to challenge and inspire people. While it may be controversial, there is no denying the impact that street art has on our urban environments and our cultural landscape.

Despite its growing popularity, street art is still controversial in some places. Some people view it as vandalism and illegal, while others see it as a legitimate form of expression that brings life and color to the streets. Cities have different policies regarding street art, with some actively promoting it as a way to boost tourism and revitalize neighborhoods, while others crack down on it as a public nuisance.
