Lil Mabu -Mathematical Disrespect

Article by Andrea McCoy | Editor Chris Jarmon | Editor Philip King

The hip-hop scene has been buzzing with anticipation since a video clip featuring Lil Mabu and Dusty Locane surfaced on Twitter, previewing what would later be known as "Mathematical Disrespect." From the first listen, it's evident that Lil Mabu isn't your typical drill artist. His intellectual wordplay, laden with clever references and puns, requires listeners to engage on a deeper level, occasionally necessitating multiple listens to grasp the full scope of his bars. Notably, his nod to the mathematical constant PI showcases his ability to seamlessly blend academia with street lore—a truly genius maneuver that stands out in the current music landscape.

The track's catchiest line, "she like, Mabu, I like purple. So I blew her back out and I left her on read," exemplifies Mabu's unique lyrical style. At face value, it's a cheeky nod to a romantic encounter, but Mabu doesn't leave it at that. He dives deeper, breaking down the color theory behind blue and red forming purple, turning a seemingly straightforward line into a multi-layered joke. This sharp, witty approach sets Lil Mabu apart from many of his contemporaries, establishing him as a refreshing voice in the New York Drill scene.

With "Mathematical Disrespect" becoming a staple in summer playlists, it's clear that Lil Mabu's blend of humor, wordplay, and cultural references has struck a chord with audiences. If you're searching for an artist who defies expectations at every turn and continuously raises the lyrical bar, Lil Mabu is undeniably worth your attention.

Article by Andrea McCoy | Editor Chris Jarmon | Editor Philip King

Jungkook’s latest offering, “Seven”, has taken the global music scene by storm, solidifying its dominance by securing the number 1 spot on the Billboard Global 200 charts for an impressive three weeks in a row. Not only does this feat mark it as Jungkook's eighth number 1 hit on these charts, but it also distinguishes it as his inaugural triumph as a solo artist. The gravity of this achievement becomes even more pronounced when considering that "Seven" is now the second longest-running number 1 by a South Korean artist in the history of the chart, surpassing streaming numbers of heavy-hitters like Travis Scott and Drake's "Meltdown".

What makes “Seven” an undeniable chart-topper is its alluring composition that seems to hold listeners captive from the first note. The chorus, in particular, serves as the song's beating heart—undeniably catchy and addictive. Such is its magnetism that fans find themselves humming its tunes at every waking moment. jelly roll - Need A favor

Article by Andrea McCoy | Editor Chris Jarmon | Editor Philip King

Country music has long been heralded as a platform for artists to convey deep-seated emotions—be it heartbreak, loss, or heartfelt messages—and Jelly Roll's latest offering, "I Need a Favor", resonates powerfully within this tradition. From the first note, listeners are pulled in by his impassioned vocal delivery, harmonizing perfectly with the pronounced flair of the guitar and the commanding presence of drums in the background. The song carries a profound message about the human tendency to call upon divine intervention during desperate times, while often overlooking the importance of daily gratitude and connection. It’s a timely reminder that nudges the listener to introspect, and for many, it’s bound to offer solace in moments of despair.

Jelly Roll's musical journey is as diverse as it is intriguing. From his initial strides as a rapper, a subsequent evolution into rock, and finally embracing country in 2021, his adaptability is evident. His foray into the country genre bore fruit with the evocative ballad, "Son Of A Sinner", which soared to the pinnacle of Country Radio charts. But his achievements in music are punctuated by a tumultuous personal history. His past, marred by arrests, extensive jail time, and a myriad of harrowing experiences, imbues his music with a raw authenticity.

"I Need a Favor" stands as a testament to Jelly Roll's innate ability to transmute pain into art. Through his poignant lyricism, listeners can feel the weight of his trials, the search for redemption, and the hope for a brighter tomorrow. It's more than just a song—it's an anthem for everyone who has faced adversity, sought divine guidance, and yearned for a second chance. It reaffirms Jelly Roll’s position as not just a versatile musician, but a gifted storyteller, turning his tumultuous past into profound narratives for the world to hear.

ice spice - deli

From the first notes, "Deli" by Ice Spice embodies the effervescence of summer with a distinct "girls riding down the block" aura. The Hip Hop Princess, as she's fondly deemed, has been steadily carving a distinct niche for herself in the music world, quickly rising through the ranks and snagging accolades like Billboard's Rookie of the Year. Her prowess extends beyond solo stints, collaborating with big-name artists like PinkPantharess and Nicki Minaj, and leaving an indelible mark with the hit track in the blockbuster, "Barbie". This trajectory suggests Ice Spice isn't just passing through; she's here to revolutionize, particularly with her introduction of a fresh wave of female drill music.

However, it's not just the addictive beats and captivating lyrics that have everyone talking. "Deli" has stirred up its share of controversy, particularly due to the appearance of underage TikTok creator Aya Tanjali dancing provocatively in the music video. While controversy can be a double-edged sword, in the case of Ice Spice, it seems to have added another layer to her already multi-faceted image.

In conclusion, "Deli" isn't merely a song; it's a statement. As the video portrays, it's a vision of what a female-dominated summer can look like, vibrant and unapologetic. With this track, Ice Spice might have not only solidified her place in the charts but also in the hearts of many, making a compelling case for "Deli" as the song of the summer.

billie eilish - what was i made for

Emerging from the effervescent shimmer of the "Barbie" movie soundtrack, Billie Eilish's latest single "What was I made for" is a poignant reflection that seamlessly intertwines with her unique artistry. The self-directed music video, a captivating visual feast, presents a transformative Billie; taking on the iconic Barbie avatar with the trademark ponytail and that adorable yellow dress, it's a vision that's both surreal and touchingly familiar. As the narrative progresses, fans are treated to a nostalgic montage – Billie's Barbie avatar navigating through a wardrobe that echoes her real-life red carpet fashion moments, serving as a brilliant homage to her style journey.

The melodic strains of this ballad are beautifully haunting, with Billie's ethereal voice accompanied solely by the gentle strokes of the piano. The rawness of the song, recorded in a single take alongside her brother Finneas, reverberates with every note, making it hard for one not to be swept away in a tide of emotions. This is not just a song; it's a confession, a catharsis, a raw outpouring of feelings. That the track was inspired by unfinished scenes from the film, as shared by Eilish on her Instagram, only adds layers of depth to its lyrics and underlying emotion.

The reception has been overwhelming, with fans and critics alike showering praise on Eilish's soulful offering. The power of "What was I made for" lies in its ability to elicit a deep, visceral reaction from the listener, making it more than just a song for a movie but a potential Oscar contender. If the whispers amidst fans are anything to go by, this may not be just another feather in Eilish's already embellished cap but possibly the crown jewel.

rylo rodriguez - equal dirt

Ever since his 2018 debut, Rylo Rodríguez has proven himself a force to be reckoned with in the music industry. The turning point in his career was undoubtedly when he teamed up with EST Gee for the hit “5500 Degrees.” However, it was his subsequent album “Been One” that truly cemented his place among the music elites, with tracks such as “Thang For You” and “Taylor Port” leaving indelible marks on the charts. One of the standout tracks from the album is "Equal Dirt," a masterful blend of old and new, where Rodríguez samples Luther Ingram’s classic “If Loving You Is Wrong I Don’t Wanna Be Right.” Sampling is an art, and in my opinion, when artists like Rodríguez and NoCap take on the challenge, they consistently deliver with finesse and authenticity.

"Equal Dirt" doesn’t merely rest on the laurels of its sample – it elevates it. The track has a magnetism that’s undeniable, largely thanks to the catchy line, “B****, who this for? Stop playing before I… Never mind.” This line, in particular, has become a TikTok sensation, capturing the imagination of countless creators and listeners alike. It's these viral moments that have a way of turning a song from just another track to an anthem, and Rodríguez certainly knows how to tap into that cultural zeitgeist.

But the magic doesn't stop with the music alone. The accompanying music video is a cinematic treat, boasting appearances from prominent names like “BMF” star Lil Meech and “Empire” sensation Serayah McNeill. Their star power, combined with Rodríguez's musical prowess, makes for a complete sensory experience that not only delights the ears but also captivates the eyes. In "Equal Dirt," Rylo Rodríguez has not only given us a track worthy of repeat listens but has also offered a visual narrative that leaves a lasting impression.

latto feat cardi b - on the floor

There are some tracks that just exude summer vibes and dominate the airwaves during those sultry months, and “Put it on da Floor” is undeniably one of them. From the catchy lyric “Rip me out the plastic I been acting brand new” which has found its way into Instagram captions, TikTok dances, and as a prominent anthem for prom season, to the surprise inclusion of Angel Reese in the music video following her unforgettable moment in WNBA history and LSU's significant win, this track is brimming with cultural references that resonate. The nod to Atlanta's rich musical legacy through the Shawty Lo line injects a nostalgic 2000s Atlanta feel, creating an interplay between the old and the new.

Cardi B’s participation in this track cannot be understated. Returning to the music scene from a hiatus, she drops a groundbreaking verse that showcases her undeniable prowess and distinctive flair. Her lyric, “Sexy dancing in the house like I’m Britney Spears,” serves as a dual homage. Firstly, it supports Britney Spears and the playful, sultry dancing videos she shares on her social media. And secondly, it acts as yet another testament to the track's quotable lines, providing fans with yet another caption-ready snippet for their social media posts.

When evaluating the success of a song, chart performance cannot be overlooked. The fact that both the original and remix of “Put it on da Floor” secured spots in the top ten of the Hot 100 Billboard Hits Chart List cements its place as a mega-hit. With its infectious hooks, culturally relevant references, and a perfect blend of two powerhouse artists, "Put it on da Floor" effortlessly claims the title of the song of the summer. And that, as the saying goes, is on period.

Jordan Ward - Cherimoya

Article by Andrea McCoy | Editor Chris Jarmon | Editor Philip King

Jordan Ward has released his album, Forward which was released in March of 2023, and the album holds fourteen songs featuring artists such as Ryan Trey, Gwen Bunn, JOONY, Joyce Wrice, and Lido. Ward has Two top tracks from this album: WHITE CROCS featuring Ryan Trey and FAMJAM4000. One of my favorites from the album is WHITE CROCS and the icing on the cake was having one of my favorite underrated artist Ryan Trey. But that song is not the one I want to shed light on right now the song I want to talk about and highlight is CHERIMOYA which is a bonus track on this album.

The song automatically catches your attention with the strokes of the guitar playing in the back along with matching harmonization layering together in the background. The song is pretty short, but it catches your attention and brings this angelic tone throughout the song. No one really likes to compare artist, so let’s not compare, but say that Jordan Ward adds what Tyler the creator, Brent Faiyaz and other artist in his category are bringing. This song is a perfect staple of a love song to assign to your longtime girlfriend or special someone. It’s easy for you to get wrapped up in the lyrics and easily listen to this song in a constant loop while driving at night or laying in your bed just to relax and be one with the music. FORWARD was featured in VIBE’s weekly New Music Friday round-up where Ward was praised as “a force to reckon with.” Jordan Ward is a 28 year old artist from St. Louis Missouri and then relocated to Los Angeles. His album FORWARD was created out of a sense of responisibility to stay true to his Missouri roots and remove himself from the assumptions of him being a west coast artist.

The breaks in the song give an intense orchestra playing in the back creating an intensity and preperation for the next verse.  while also delivering tones of a harp and a keyboard playing in unison as the lyrics are being delivered throughout. My first choice for listening to this song is through your headphones so you can get the total experience this song gives which is beauty and serenity.
