Classic Trends that have made a comeback

Article by Lethabo Mncwanga | Editor Deandre Hill | Editor Jayla McGowan

The one thing that I was always tell people about the fashion industry is that the fashion industry is simply a revolving door f trends that have come and gone over the years. If there is a trend that wish you could have taken part of a trend but you were too young or maybe you were not even born yet, then do not worry because that trend whether from the 1950s, 1970s or the 2000s, will make its way back into the present with a contemporary flair to suit current times. So, while we wait for those trends to make their way let’s take at the that have made a return.

The butterfly top initially gained widespread popularity in 2000, when Mariah Carey donned a sparkly Emanuel Ungaro butterfly top with low-rise jeans on the red carpet. In the early 2020s, the top made a remarkable comeback as the YTK aesthetic experienced a resurgence, thanks to influential figures such as Italian fashion house Blumarine and celebrities like Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Saweetie, and others. However, it appears that the butterfly motif trend might be losing momentum, as evidenced by Versace's summer 2023 collection, a collaboration with Dua Lipa, which prominently showcased butterflies in both clothing and accessories.

Denim jeans have remained a timeless fashion staple for as long as one can remember. They have continuously stayed in the trend zeitgeist, evolving by changing their colors, cuts, or silhouettes to adapt to the current fashion climate. One such instance is the popularity of wide-leg jeans in the 1990s. During that era, the baggy cut and relaxed silhouette of these jeans perfectly suited the laid-back fashion attitude of the time.

Interestingly, the wide-leg jeans made a comeback in the 2020s, finding their way back into the public's affection. Nowadays, they are often styled with sneakers to recreate that casual and relaxed 90s look. However, these versatile jeans can also be dressed up with a pair of heels, giving the outfit a more polished and elegant finish, suitable for various occasions. The enduring appeal of denim jeans lies in their ability to adapt and reinvent themselves while maintaining their place in the ever-changing landscape of fashion.

50's

The silk scarf first gained popularity in the 1920s and 1950s, with iconic celebrities like Clara Bow, Audrey Hepburn, and Grace Kelly elegantly showcasing the accessory. Despite some fluctuations in its popularity, the silk scarf has managed to transcend time and trends, reemerging in various decades like the 80s, 2000s, and continuing its presence into the 2020s, partly thanks to luxury brands like Hermes, who have kept it in vogue.

Throughout its long history, the silk scarf has been worn in numerous stylish ways. It has served as a classic necktie, exuding sophistication and charm. It has also been creatively used as a headscarf, adding a touch of elegance to any outfit. Furthermore, fashion-forward individuals have incorporated silk scarves as unconventional tops, bringing a unique and artistic flair to their attire. Additionally, the scarf's versatility has extended to being wrapped around the handle of a handbag, adding a chic and eye-catching accent.

Indeed, the silk scarf has proven to be a timeless and versatile accessory, adapting to different fashion eras while maintaining its allure and appeal across generations.
